Problem solving using PECT

Changed behaviours (such as aggression, repetition, refusing care etc.) are often trigger or caused by unmet needs that the person is unable to express. But, identifying unmet needs can be difficult.

The
PECT model helps you to become a 'detective' to investigate the unmet needs. The letters offer you an easy way to quickly run some potential causes that may be contributing to a change in behaviour. You can then develop strategies, approaches or redirections to address them.

PECT stands for:
Personal (P) needs, Environment (E), Communication (C) and Task (T) and activities.

I wish I had known this 3 years ago... it all makes so much sense now and would have saved me days of arguing and fighting with dad!
