General Practitioners (GPs) are pivotal in primary health care, and with approximately 70% of people living with dementia residing at home and in the community, they play a critical role in dementia care.
However, given the complexity and often non-clinical nature of dementia, along with the limited consultation time available for GPs, they often struggle to provide the necessary support for their patients and families.
Recognising this, we were incredibly grateful to be invited to speak to over 1,000 GPs in Melbourne by HealthEd, one of Australia’s largest GP professional development and conference organisers!
We spoke about the importance of the dementia journey, psychosocial care strategies, and how My Dementia Companion can fill the gap as a ‘practical tool they can prescribe’ to their patients and carers. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, particularly regarding the impact on their work and the outcomes for their patients.
HealthEd also generously hosted us at their Brisbane and Sydney conference, where we also received very positive feedback. It was also fantastic to meet GP dementia care advocate Dr Marita Long in person and also listen to her amazing speech!
